At 2,700 m of altitude this small town is still home to Andean traditions and beautiful landscapes. Surrounded by some of the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range of Venezuela, Los Nevados offers one of the best and complete visits within the Venezuelan Andes without presenting great difficulties neither physical nor logistical. Its inhabitants known as "Nevaderos" are friendly and hospitable people, always smiling to the visitor. AVAILABLE TOURS TO LOS NEVADOS

1.- TREKKING & VISIT TO LOS NEVADOS 2D/1N (NO CABLE CAR)

Duration: 2 days and 1 night 

Difficulty: Easy - Medium (depending on use of mules during the trekking)

Day to day program: 
  1. Day 1: Depart in the morning heading for the road linking the town of Merida to the towns of San Rafael del Morro and Chama, before continuing to Los Nevados. It is a journey of an incredible panoramic and escenic value and will travel through a set of mountain roads which can be driven only the 4x4 experts. We will make several stops to enjoy the view and have a snack in the picturesque village of Mosnandá. We hope to get to Los Nevados early afternoon. We left our bags at our Posada which is a beautiful house run by a local family. The afternoon will be for a visit to the town itself, this is how we'll acclimatize to the altitude. We'll visit the Plaza Bolívar, the church, the cemetery, the mill, and if there is high walking spirit we can go all the way to the river to take a bath. Traditional dinner and overnight at the posada. (L / D)

  2. Day 2: After breakfast we'll go hiking for about 4-5 hours to see the nearby peaks and get into the valley of the "Media Luna" during the hike we will have views of the peaks "El León" (4740 m) and ""El Toro" (4755 m) and arrive at an altitude of 3300 m.a.s.l, a great opportunity to appreciate the changes of climatic zones and enjoy the beauty of the vegetation of the Andean plateau. The trail we'll follow is part-circular and returning we'll also have nice views of the village of Los Nevados and the valley in which it is located. Lunch at the Posada and return by 4x4 to Mérida (arrival in the late afternoon). (D / A) The hike can also be done on mules upon request of the group participants

2.- TREKKING TO LOS NEVADOS 2D/1N (CABLE CAR VERSION)

Duration: 2 days and 1 night

Difficulty: Easy - Medium (depending on use of mules during the trekking)

Day to day program:

  2. Day 2 : After breakfast we'll head to the road that links Los Nevados and Merida's cable car system, which internationally known for being the longest and highest in the world. The tour will take us to Valley La Media Luna and have beautiful views of the peaks "El León" (4740 m) and Toro ( 4755 m). The tour will be combining mules and walk and we'll make stops at various points to appreciate the different types of vegetation as we switch thermic zones of the altitude all the way to the "Páramo" once we exceed the boundary of the 3000 - 3500 m. Here we'll enjoy the colorful vegetation, being the " frailejón " the main protagonist. The highest point of the tour will be "El Alto de la Cruz" at 4150 m.a.s.l. After we'll the forest of " Los Coloraditos " A tree growing at very high altitudes also characteristic of the high moor. We will also have a nice view of the Laguna de los anteojos, to finally arrive at the cable car station " Loma Redonda " ( 4045 m). From this station we can take the cable car up the last point of the system a journey of 12.5 miles to Pico Espejo station at 4765 meters (the cost of this ticket is not included in the price of the tour). Cable car journey back to Mérida, enjoying amazing views of the city as of the cloud forest below us. Arrival in Merida in the afternoon . (B / L ( picnic )

3.- TREKKING TO LOS NEVADOS 3D/2N

Duration: 3 days and 2 nights 

Difficulty: Medium 

The program in its first two days is identical to that described in the cable car version. At the end of the second day we'll continue to a montain refuge and stay overnight. In any case here we include the entire text of the program.

  3. Day 3: Today we have a day of hiking in the cloud forest of the Sierra Nevada. Have breakfast with beautiful views of Pico Bolivar (Venezuela the highest with 4,978 meters) and embark on our trek which will take about 4-5 hours to reach the town of Mucunutan. There we were waiting for our transport to return to Merida. (B / L (picnic))

REMARKS & NOTES:

  • This itinerary may change depending on weather conditions at the time and the influx of visitors. Los Nevados can be visited all year round. Being the best months those of the dry season, from November trough May.
  • When visiting Los Nevados you have to keep in mind that we are entering a high mountain area, so we have to take into account the altitude at which we are at every moment. We recommend using sunscreen with high factor and keep the body warm. It is important at all times to follow the recommendations of the guide and notify him/her of any discomfort you may feel.

 POSSIBLE TOUR COMBINATIONS:

The tour to Los Nevados can be combined with a safari to Los Llanos (+3-4 days), a trip to the Catatumbo (+2-3 days), Mountain Bike Tours (+1 day) or Rafting in Barinas (+2 days ).
